Life Shouldn't Be Rocket Science

This post is inspired by the 2007 Sundance movie 'Rocket Science.' A movie about a boy trying to figure out life - a boy who stutters [a lot] and decides to join the debate team because of a girl. I only saw the movie once, but the more I've thought about it (the characters, the plot, the writing), I've become rather fond of it.

Lately, I've been in a life funk and I can't figure out what I can do to get out of it. So I thought I would expand on a few things that I wish were a little less complicated...things that shouldn't be rocket science:

WORK - just show up, sit down, think, do, make decisions, follow through and do whatever it is that needs to be done in order for you to do your job (just be ethical about it = don't lie).

DATING
- I don't even have the energy to expound. It should just be easier.

GETTING SLIM & TRIM - if a person is exercising regularly and not over-indulging (or even indulging) on their favorite foods, getting in shape should be a cinch. Sadly I think genetics somehow get involved and mess the simplicity of it all. Thanks Mom. Thanks Dad.

GETTING YOUR DEPOSIT BACK - this is on behalf of my dear friend Noelle. If a tenant keeps up her end of a contractual agreement (contrary to what the landlord and the landlord's lover says) the tenant should rightfully receive the deposit back.

Dear Things I Didn't Quite Get to Today

Dear Yoga class,
I guess me mastering the crow pose will have to wait another week.

Dear Laundry,
Since you aren't overflowing out of the basket, I don't feel too guilty but I did have the intention of getting an early start on you before the weekend. That should count for something.

Dear Grocery Shopping,
I have a wheat, oats, macaroni, rice and flour so I don't really need bread, milk, eggs, yogurt, cereal, chicken, lettuce, other assorted veggies and fruits, right? It's called food storage for a reason.

Dear W2 form at my sister's,
It's not that I don't want to do my taxes - on the contrary - I can't wait to get my money back from the government but for some reason you being 5 houses away is just too far - you might as well be in Siberia.

Dear DI Bag of clothing in the back seat of my car,
You've already been there for two weeks, what's one more day?

Dear Blizzard,

STOP IT.
LEAVE and NEVER COME BACK.

I like what I like

Dear food establishment workers,
If a customer orders food a particular way, don't comment on it. I'm guessing they wouldn't order it that way if they didn't want it THAT way. However, on the flip side, if someone orders a Cranberry Walnut salad with no cranberries and no walnuts, then that is something completely different - because they aren't really ordering the Cranberry Walnut salad. Those people are silly and those people deserve to be thought of as such.

***a little background might help***

For lunch today I was able to escape the confines of my cubicle and eat out at delicious Plates & Palates in Bountiful with a few of my wonderfully witty and intelligent coworkers. As I was placing my order (a half ham & swiss sandwich with a half chef's salad, no ham) the person at the counter looked at me like I just escaped from a mental facility.

Order taker guy - "You want what?" he asked.
Me - "A half ham and swiss with a half chef's salad, but with no ham on the salad," was my reply. I did order in English I thought to myself...right?
Order taker guy - "But you ordered a ham & swiss..." he so graciously reminded me.
Me - "Yup and a chef's salad with no ham." He looks at me, shakes his head and goes "Okaayyy."

First question - was my order really an odd request?
Second question - can't a person enjoy a type of food prepared one way (sandwiched between two slices of sourdough bread with melted cheese) and at the same time not enjoy the same type of food when prepared a different way (cold cut up in cubes in a salad)? I think so. Think about it. What foods do you like prepared one way but not another way...

Dear Camp Electric Youth

You'll be receiving my video audition shortly. Debbie Gibson, I've been waiting all my life for this moment. See you in July!

You can make your Electric Youth dreams come true too.

Dear Dry Pack Cannery

As part of my calling as co-chair of the Provident Living Committee (aka Temporal Welfare aka Food Storage, Employment & Financial Advisor), my co-chair and I organized a trip to the Dry Pack Cannery at Welfare Square for our ward. Five people showed (myself included) plus our second counselor in the bishopric. It's a proven fact that singles don't get uber excited about food storage but I can't see the harm in starting a small one for myself. True, I won't need 30 lbs of wheat, but hey, rice, sugar, dried apples, macaroni - sign me up for a can of each! I must admit I had a good time...even if I did have to get up at 7:30 on a Saturday morning. At least I know I'm earning heaven points and when the end of the world comes, I'll have my dried apples & starter kit to save me from starvation.

Dear Blog Readers

Thank you for convincing me I should stop being paranoid and return to granting everyone permission to view/read my random rantings. It's not like the CIA couldn't find a way to hack into it or the computer programmers/hackers/IT geniuses at work...
